Dream Rushmore has always felt like an outcast. From high school to college, he's been trying to figure out who he is and what he wants out of life. With his budding sexuality and the slew of boys after his affection, Dream can't seem to keep his head on straight. There's Rodney "Swag" Atkins, the track star living a secret life that he wants Dream a part of; "Pusha", his hustlin' on again, off again lover and Calvin Tate, chapter president of the most illustrious fraternity on campus. Add to the mix, his two dysfunctional, damaged best friends, Epiphany Wingate and Tyree Williams, who have their own hidden insecurities and you've got a recipe for disaster. Each key player in Dream's world looks to him for a crutch that he might not be able to give anymore, as his own life falls apart. As these three friends try to navigate their lives while attending the Historically Black College, Newman Campbell University, they experience heartbreak, pain, tragedy, and finally, triumph. What happens when this boy's dream is deferred?

Reading this book immediately reminded me of my HBCU days. The Greeks, the Athletes, the SGA folks, the "Popular" people on campus, kids who wanted to belong so bad that they'll do anything so their name will have some weight behind it. And then there was just me. Even though I was in the band, the band had all of those same type "clickish" people in it. Those people were fake and phony to me, doing anything just to be one of the "cool" kids, and I wanted no parts of it. So in that regard, Dream reminded me of myself. He was his own person and I really appreciated that. I understood his struggle. I got all of his struggle, even when it came to his father.

As far as school is concerned, I also remember getting that notice from my advisor telling me that I was reaching my maximum amount of credit hours and I may not get anymore financial aid, even though graduation was just a semester away. Dream and I have so many similarities that it's crazy. Even with the love life. And with the dudes who came in and out of my life. Even with the issue of homosexuality with my mother, and how it took her awhile to come around to it. The more I read, the more I felt like I was seeing my life experiences being played out between the pages of this book. And then add in your best friends. In Dream's case, Tyree and Epiphany. I too have a best friend who can't hold water, but you can't help but love him. And, I, too, had the best friend that was sleeping with a college administrator, although in my case they were all male. And the mention of the modeling troupes, reminded me of Faces, Epicurean and Images Modeling Troupes back when I was in the school. And the Greek parties with the crazy punches that got everyone messed up. And the other stuff that happened too often on college campuses across the country at these parties, but no one really talks about. I appreciate you bringing that topic up because I had a friend who that happened too as well.

And then there were the trade/ DL dudes who flooded the campus, posted up on a wall checking out everybody. And the random trips to Atlanta, using the Battle of the Bands as an excuse to get there...but was just really going to party and see the boys lol. And the food fights in the café. Man...I could go on and on.

D. Rashad Battle, reading this book put me back in a great time, and sometimes, a not-so-great-time, of my life and all the life challenges and experiences that my time at my HBCU, FAMU, taught me...and for that, I thank you. Awesome job!

Dream Deferred D Rashad Battle 9781544218427 Books Reviews

Okay.... So I loved Tatted Teardrops and How To Kick Love Out, but this one, not too much. I struggled to finish this one. I rolled my eyes way too many times while reading this (LOL). That Tyree is so unlikeable...I just couldn't with him. Some of the things the characters did, things they got mad over, I had to ask myself, are they in college or middle school? Dream is really the only reason I stuck with the book... I still look forward to reading more books by D Rashad....
Great book story line should have been a bit longer
Good read
Mr. Battle does it again with this wonderful body of work. Dreamed Deferred put me in a place of love, forgiveness, and acceptance. This is a must read. ❤❤❤❤
Let me tell you how much I enjoyed this book!!!! OMG. Tyree is soooo me! I resonated so much with that character. Dream and his final choice at love made me become tearful. I was captivated by E's storyline. Everything flowed and brought me back to my college days. The parties, the trade, the Passion Punch (I can't lie. I've had a few cups of that). This book was a good read and I am FOREVER a fan of D. Rashad.
Honestly this book is better than I imagined. Definitely an attention grabber from the start. The characters are all very relatable and most college students, will connect with at least one of the characters GUARANTEED. Once I opened it i didnt want to put it down. Honestly makes me want to know more about Dream and more about the Author also. The ending leaves you wondering what's next and the story line is easy to follow yet not predictable at all. In my opinion a must read for those who love reading novels. Great good Mr.Battle Great job.
I want to start by saying I connected with the book in so many levels. The Author really spoke to me and some personal issues I went through. The book was true about real friendship, and the things we do for each other. I felt the author looked at so many angles of what happens when you don't love yourself. Finding love can be so hard but the journey can be fun and sometimes painful. This is a great book to read.
