"The Silk Road Then and Now," is a photographic exploration of the traditional homes of Turkey located along the ancient Silk Road linking Asia to the West. Gilbert's photographs are powerful, mysterious and elegant. They depict both humble and affluent homes, showing them exactly as they are a mix of furniture, art, linens, household serving items and vibrantly colored, centuries-old handwoven rugs. The rich thread tying the images together into a fascinating whole are design, color, balance and light.

Spending time with Lynn Gilbert's beautiful book of photographs of the interiors of family homes along The Silk Road, especially in Turkey, offered me a meditative journey through territory I could "unroll" before my eyes as I turned from one page to the next or could return to and suddenly see a detail which "spoke" to me. The book uses the Language of Images to communicate. Always, there is the Light coming into the family's home, sometimes coming to rest on items of abundant color or in others, revealing the clarity of tone-on-tone of dark woodwork. Lynn Gilbert's Preface and Artist's statement form "The Bookends" of the images and offers just the right amount of Text to expand the reader's understanding as well as offer a springboard to further contemplation.Product details

The Silk Road Then and Now Lynn Gilbert 9781937798017 Books Reviews
Lynn Gilbert's book is a treasure. After a lifetime of involvement with the disciplines of anthropology I recognize this book's value. It captures the universality of beauty in a culture hidden from the Western world. Ms. Gilbert, thank you for venturing forth.
Lynn Gilbert captures humanity exquisitely in rooms full of life but often empty of inhabitants -- just magic. These beautiful images of homes and rooms amazingly reveal a cultural richness and intimacy -- with or without people. The lighting is reminiscent of Renaissance paintings -- shedding a through the window warm glow. Her skill at architectural images is coupled with a unique ability to capture the spirit of people in her portraits. This merging of talents shows us empty rooms and houses that are teeming with life. Within these rooms, of rich or humble furnishings, we meet the culture, personalities, and life styles of their owners. There is a strong sense that the owner has left for a moment but will return shortly. Gilbert has created a masterful and incredibly intimate collection of photographs from parts of Turkey seldom exposed to the camera lens.
Getting a view of people and their houses, some probably a century old is so wonderful and unique. Just by viewing these pictures, one can get a feel of how people once lived so simply but in their own elegance. It was fascinating book and also a reminder that an era is coming to an end. It is wonderful that we now have it recorded. I keep revisiting the photos and each time I notice more things. Bravo Lynn Gilbert for doing such a superb job.
