Two words destroyed everything. One man gave him the strength to start over.

Freshman year of college opened Austin's eyes to a world he'd only dreamed about. He was finally free to live his life without secrets. More confident in himself, he foolishly thought his family would accept him if he came out. Now, he's gone from traveling the world with his family to living on the streets while trying to find a way to pay for college. He'll never again make the mistake of trusting others to help him.

David's family struggled to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads when he was a child, but there was one constant in their home Love. He's worked hard to earn a position as a tenured professor and build a home of his own.

Offering a helping hand to the insecure college student, David realizes he's been so focused on his material worth, he's neglected finding someone to share his life with. Can he break through Austin's defenses and show him he's worthy of love?

While the concept had some promise, the execution was pretty amateurish. There was no consistent character development -- the MCs frequently stated something about themselves, and then did the opposite. Their motivations changed within a single paragraph. Nor did they appear to know anything about each other -- I actually cracked up when the older man enthused "He's an old soul" about the poutiest twink imaginable. And they just weren't likeable. The older character continally shoves, restrains and orders the kid around, all the while professing to not want to push him into anything, while the kid whines about how how he's "wrecked everything" when he resists being manipulated.

There were bizarre non-sequiturs and unbelieveable plot premises (really? The kid works construction full time and is still sleeping in the park? The bff has an apartment she doesn't live in because she's staying on the street to be with her homeless boyfriend (yeah..) but the kid can't crash there?). Actually, the whole premise purporting to be about homelessness was insulting to people who really have no options - authors should at least do some minimal research.

But what finally caused me to give it up after pushing myself to read to the 50% point was the complete lack of real-world perspective the author showed. A first-year, untenured college professor (sociology, no less!) who grew up dirt poor and spent "tens of thousands on a fancy degree", took a year off to do community service and now dresses expensively, drives a hot car and lives in a hotel for the summer? I wanna live on that planet...

All of the different threads of this story are woven together in perfect harmony to create a beautiful tapestry of loss, love and forgiveness. David and Austin are fabulous characters. The emotions are so engrossing. I wanted to pull Austin into my arms and tell him he is loved. These two people go through such a roller coaster of emotions. All they really want is to be loved and accepted for who they are.
Large sections of the dialogue made me think it was set in the 18th century. The older character's English was too proper for an informal conversation. There were lots of typos in the book as well, which need to be fixed. I did like the story though and I think the two characters learned from each other.
This was a really great story with a great message. That message being that you can overcome and be more than your circumstances. This book is slightly different than others in the teacher/student genre. David is a professor and Austin is a student but they did not meet through the school and did not realize the connection until later. David is 15 yrs older than Austin and has much more life experience, but they are both new to relationships. They worked very well together after they worked their individual issues out. The epilogue was great.
Stereotypes about people because of misperceptions based on appearances rather than on actually knowing them played a prominent role at the beginning of this book. Later the age difference kept raising its head until both realized that if they wanted their relationship to work, they would have to work at it. Communication and listening helped them deepen their intimacy. By the end of the book, the person who had started out being homeless had gone full circle and was now helping others who were homeless. I really enjoyed reading this book!
I do not typically read M/M romance; however, I enjoy Sloan Johnson's writing so I thought I would give it a shot. I have to say that this story is not at all what I was expecting. I thought it was BDSM in nature, because of the title. But, I was pleasantly surprised to discover a contemporary story that was about two people finding love. It was sweet and was very evocative, especially with some of the family dynamic issues. I was happy to see the couple, David and Austin, find love with one another. The end of the story was beautiful with Austin finding his calling through adversity and because of it, he was able to help a friend in need like he helped David when he needed it.
Another great story from Sloan.

Characters you can relate to and feel a part of their journey.

When Austin realizes that his family has abandoned him after his confession to being gay, he doesn't know where to go or what to do. Within hours of being in the street, he meets Casey and Bree, who show him the ropes to his new life.

When Casey finds a day job for him and Austin, little does Austin know that that one day will end up changing his life and his prospective of the society we live in. Things aren't always as they seem...can Austin really trust those around him?

I absolutely love Austin and the cast of characters around him. A great first read for those wanting to try a M/M romance.
This is an amazing, emotional story between David and Austin, that shows just how far you will go for love. David is a professor at the college Austin will be attending. Over the summer as they fall in love this fact is never disclosed between them. David is an emotionally shattered mess when they first meet. This is a terrifically written story about two men who are on a journey of discovery and learning how to love together. They make honest mistakes, have a lot of bumps in the road but they never truly give up on each other. I loved the message of this story, the strength that Austin's character had to have to beat the odds. I loved the relationship between all the characters and the way they interacted. I really enjoyed this story. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!
