I've always preferred my romances on the sweet, not necessarily spicy side. Yet, Billy London hooked me with "Windows" and her entire Italian Knights series. Her novels always seem to have a solid foundation of love, friendship and sweetness along with sizzle. Now, I have another series to look forward to, beginning with "Kissing the Canvas".Lilly is stuck. Her plans for the future are in jeopardy because of her drunken, gambling addict father. She's desperate for money and isn't sure where to turn. Then, an unexpected offer falls into her lap. Marry and live with Pasha, a Russian immigrant in order for him to become a citizen and her future will be set. But is marrying a stranger the answer or is she getting herself into more trouble than she can handle?
Pasha is also stuck between a rock and a hard place. He needs to be married before his visa expires in order to escape his past and continue with his boxing career. He isn't necessarily the happiest with the idea of a visa marriage, but it is a necessary evil. At least he thinks so until he begins to get to know Lily. Now he can't help being drawn to his wife and wanting more than a fake marriage.
I loved these two characters. Lilly is smart, kind, loving and funny. Her and her cousin made me laugh out loud on more than one occasion. Once Pasha gets to know her, he is enchanted with her wit, sweetness and strong sense of loyalty. Pasha is also a character a girl could love. He is smart, funny and polite. In short he is a true gentleman, which is something you don't read about very often. This character exhibited quiet strength. He wasn't the alpha male, strutting around and bullying all those around him. He was comfortable within himself enough to know when to take a step back and when to handle his business.
Chemistry is the cornerstone of romance and it is in abundance here. What I loved most was that their chemistry extended beyond the bedroom. They were just a great couple that built a friendship first and everything else flowed naturally from there. There were no misunderstandings or childish, self -destructive behavior here. They were grownups and it showed.
It is with a big smile on my face that I recommend "Kissing the Canvas". It is one of the best books that I have read in quite some time. Billy hit this one out of the park.

Kissing the Canvas edition by Billy London Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
This book had potential to be better than it was. I like this author's voice, I really do. It is a bit irreverent and very smart. This book only had glimpses of that irreverence & smartness which is why I think this book could have done better.
The basic story is that Pasha Markovitch is a Russian boxer who lives in London. He needs sponsorship to go on to bigger and better things in the sport but his lack of British citizenship is preventing that.
Lily Asare has just had her life savings stolen by her boozing, gambling wastrel of a father. Without it she can't start her own business and she currently absolutely hates her current lech of a boss.
Pasha's father has a solution. Lily marries Pasha so he can become a citizen by marriage. And he'll pay Lily the money.
So this becomes a rather murky Marriage-of-convenience story.
I rather liked Lily and Pasha together but I felt so many other elements of the story competed (too successfully, imo) with the romance. For one thing both Pasha and Lily each have a set of frightful parents. And their dysfunctional relationship with their respective parents take up some rather hefty real estate in the book.
I generally like messy relationships amongst characters in books. Feels more life-like. People don't behave like book characters do, so when I see book characters behaving like real people I like it. In this case it had the effect of coming off as rather disjointed and a little un-cohesive.
It may sound like I did not like this book. I did. I actually did whip right through it. But I think my rating and review in reflecting a comparison to other works the author has done and this book feels just a little not up to her normal standards.
Funny story, I actually purchased this to test out a theory I had on payments….it didn't work…but I was very pleased with my "accidental" purchase. I have been very hesitant in purchasing another BWWM interracial novel. I enjoy reading interracial romances, but lately all the sex has been such a turn off. I mean, they've been steamy, yes, but lacking in every other aspect, like character or story development. This story definitely did not lack in any of those. Both characters were exceedingly likable. I loved how the heroine grew a backbone, and that her husband was such a sturdy, faithful, and caring man (even though they didn't know each other very well). He wasn't overly macho, and "alpha-like". The tension and familial dynamics on both sides were entertaining, and intense. Ms. London wrote this story very well. The story, and characters had a good flowing development. Nothing felt rushed, the romance developed slowly, but surely, and the story at the end felt complete. There were no ends that Ms. London forgot to tie. What I absolutely enjoyed the most was the fact that the fact that she was black wasn't mentioned OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER. (Same with the ethnicity of the hero) Yes, the fact that he was Russian was mentioned over and over, but not without reason. I've gotten so tired of reading American bwwm romances, because the topic that the woman is black, and the man is white, and the apparent disparity between the two is brought up constantly. That whole thing takes away from the story, and it was refreshing to read a story where that particular topic did not over saturate the story, and romance.
Also, I totally forgot that I had another book from Billy London! I realized it, and then thought, oh! I enjoyed that other one too! So, I would definitely purchase again from her, and am awaiting what else she has in store for her readers! Congrats, you've just earned one more faithful reader Ms. London D Keep on going with yo bad self! )
