Secret Shopper Tanya Taimanglo 9781482313772 Books

Among the hundreds and thousands of books I've ever read, this is my SECOND book review. It took me almost two weeks to finish it due to the many interruptions I keep getting every time I turn on my kindle. LOL. Not only did I enjoy it very much where I didn't want to put it down but it hit close to home for me with some of the similarities in the story. I definitely can relate. Being "raised" in home sweet home Guam, leaving my families and friends to start a new life away, and all that good, bad and ugly stuff that Phoenix experienced. :)Few reasons (among many) why I love this book are:
1. How the author kept the island roots alive about Guam in every other chapter.
2. How strong she stood her ground about her feelings despite the things going on around her and in her life.
3. One tough Guam girl or rather, Chamorrita and a secret shopper at that!
Reading this book really made me laughed out loud especially the "Mufasa" part. Took me a good 2 minutes to hush and continue reading until to the saddest part during the funeral where I was literally in tears.(crying at 2am got my husband worried.) When a story does that to you and zaps you into it, that's when you know that author is a gem and makes you look forward to the next book or series (hint hint) :) Knowing the author personally, I felt like I was watching a movie starring my former high school teacher and her family. Hmm, in my opinion, a movie wouldn't be so bad for the secret shopper. With all that said, 10 stars (even though amazon allows only 5...hehe) for a wonderful read and talented author. MAOLEK MRS.T! HUGS!

Secret Shopper Tanya Taimanglo 9781482313772 Books Reviews

I didn't think this story was as bad as some of the reviews made out. It was the story of someone, whose marriage was ending, she had only been with that one person and she was overweight. She lost weight and found she was actually an attractive person of which she did not believe it before. Some of it was a little over the top, but it also told of two people who were instantly attracted to each other and they Actually got to be friends instead of jumping right into bed with each other as the heroine for once, went through with her divorce and tried to get her head together before actually being with someone else which I believe was and would be the correct thing to do. I would probably read another story from Tanya.
Phoenix and her friend, Rachel were a "hoot", loved both characters and their fun, quirky friendship. Even Phoenix's family is interesting as you begin to read about some of them later in the book. Bradley was a total rat in the way that he treated Phoenix or "Nix" as he called her and I liked the way she turned the tables on him when she found out some painful things. The author has the reader so hoping that she won't weaken and return to him with things unchanged. After she makes some changes with Rachel's help, she starts attracting men like crazy. Something that is good for her damaged self-image but kind of scary to her too. While on the job as a Secret Shopper, she meets Thomas and the attraction sparks start to fly! Will she go back to Bradley or start with a new love? Or maybe even no man at all for awhile? That is the question.
I liked this book, even though there were a few times when things slowed down a little bit. I really enjoyed the way Phoenix explained things in her thoughts, she was really funny. As a matter of fact there was lots of humor in this book. Some of the funniest stuff was the conversations between Phoenix and Rachel. Of course there was serious things going on too, like Phoenix's dad becoming critically ill but such is life. If this was a movie, some might call it a "Chick Flick" but if asked if I thought if it was a Hit or a Miss. I'd say a Hit!
Phoenix Farmer had moved to San Diego with her husband Bradley from her beloved Guam. She and Bradley had been sweethearts since she was a high school sophomore, and they’d been married for three years. She knew something was up with him, because he had become too different. Then she finds out there’s another woman, and he’s joining the reserves with her. After a depressing pity party, her best friend Rachel flies in from Guam and reinvents Phoenix. In the meantime, she’s met Thomas, a dreamy man who’s different than anyone she’s ever met. She’s determined not to date anyone until her divorce becomes final, but, even when that happens, she’s just not ready. Can she continue to put Thomas off, and how long will he wait? How much time will she need?

In some ways, this was a sweet, cute story, but it was also crude in places. There’s some off-color comments, like “I really wanted to jump his bones.“ There was quite a bit of profanity, although there’s plenty of books with more. I counted 76 cases here. I didn’t like Rachel very much and thought she was a bad influence on Phoenix. Phoenix was too cold, stand-offish, and uncaring toward Thomas. I felt sorry for Thomas. He was the best character in the whole book, and he often got the shaft. Phoenix zigzagged between wanting Thomas and just not caring, and her indecisiveness became repetitive and old. The novel had some inconsistencies, and too much was told rather than shown. There were almost no errors, however. “House” being used for “hose” was the only one I noted. The story held promised, but sometimes it delivered and sometimes it didn’t.
Although the main part of the story takes place in the US, the characters also spend time in Guam. I know absolutely nothing about Guam so I was very interested in all the information throughout the book. The story dragged in spots, and I got confused with so many different characters showing up, especially in the end, but it was a good read. Not your typical romance. Cheating husband, frumpy wife who finds her mojo and makes anew life for herself. And no graphic sex! Yay. I took a star off for the many grammatical and phrasing errors. I don't know if this was self published, but no author should edit their own book. They're too invested in it. I'll proofread her next book for free!
